Bead Pattern 20: Swirly early medieval bead (reproduction)
Pattern #20 is a swirly opaque blue and white barrel-shaped bead with red/yellow dots. Specific date of the original bead is unknown, but it could have been produced at any time between the Iron Age and the Saxon period, with the Roman period or thereafter being more likely.
Patriotic Beads
There's a lot going on here. This red base bead has white stripes, yellow ends, and blue crossed waves highlighted in yellow dots. It's from Merovingian Gaul and dates between 300 and 700 AD. An example was found in Grave 245 at Verlaine, Belgium. Each bead is individually handcrafted in glass; therefore some variation is normal. Price is per bead.
Bead Pattern 79: Frankish dotty barrel bead (reproduction)
I'll admit I nickname this one the "Christmas dot" design in my notes. A bright little white barrel bead dotted in red and green, it's a Frankish bead style dating about 500-600 AD. Several examples are on a bead strand at the Prehistoric Museum in Munich. Each bead is individually handcrafted in glass; therefore some variation is normal. Price is per bead.
Bead Pattern 72: Anglo-Saxon dot & wave beads (reproduction)
White beads with a simple blue single wave and double red dots are an Anglo-Saxon pattern dating c400 – 650AD. This pattern is identified as type P22 in the excavation report from the Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Mucking, Essex, UK. Each bead is individually handcrafted in glass; therefore some variation is normal. Price is per bead.
Bead Pattern 46: Blue reticella Viking bead from Ribe (reproduction)
Translucent blue glass wrapped with bands of twisted reticella blue/white stringer and a red equatorial line were produced in abundance at the Viking town of Ribe, Denmark. The design is possibly of Celtic insular origin.
Bead Pattern 10: Irish complex dot bead (reproduction)
This style of bead (turquoise or blue base with reddish roundels filled with blue and white dots) was originally produced on the Continent in 4th C BC and later imported to Britain via Roman occupation. The style was reintroduced by Irish glassworkers after 500AD. Examples have been found at Garrow Tor, Cornwall. (Guido 1978: 62)
